Thursday Thirteen #1: Things I love about camping
This is my first edition of Thursday Thirteen and I'm excited to be a part of it. I love lists. Love making them. Love organizing them. I even love (trying) to complete them. This Thursday my post is on what I love about camping. We haven't had any time this year to go which really bums me out, due to babe going to Children's for his MRI and other stuff. So I really miss it.
1.) The smell of the outdoors around you. I love BC and we have tons of rich and plentiful trees around here. There isn't anything better than the smell of the WILD heh heh.
2.) Roasting marshmallows by the fire. I love letting mine catch fire so I can blow them out and the outside is crisp (almost burnt) a bit. Mmmmmmmmmm yummy!
3.) The tranquil sounds of nature. Birds chirping early in the morning. Crickets at night. Frogs by the lake croaking, and the gentle sound of the stream flowing by. It's very relaxing allowing me to forget my worries.
4.) Having the kids go to bed before 8 pm. This never happens at home, no matter how many times we try there is always another potty break or cup of milk being demanded for. Camping is different. Something about the outdoors makes the kids dizzy with sleep. I love it.
5.) Snuggling with DH under a sleeping bag. Okay I know it sounds weird but it makes me feel like a teenager again. Like any moment my parents could enter the tent and say "HEY STOP THAT!) LOL
6.) Seeing new things. Even though we mostly camp in our backyard (so to speak) just outside of town. I always find some new shop, new place for the kids to enjoy, new market to explore. So even if we are only half hour out of town it still feels like we are further away.
7.) Cost: As a low income family dealing with disabilities and lack of funds this is important. Camping is cheap which is wayyyyyy cool. It costs us only 22 bucks a night CDN to camp which I think is reasonable and it's more fun than a hotel.
8.) Time: There is just no concept of it when you are camping. The hours of fun tick by without care or reason or need to complete a task or meet a deadline. There is nothing like it and it's great.
9.) Peacefulness: One of my favorite things to enjoy about camping. After the kids are in bed, DH and I will just sit by the fire and talk, sip on hot chocolate and enjoy the peacefulness that seems to accompany camping at night time.
10.) People: One thing I am is a talker. I am guilty of walking up to complete strangers to strike a conversation. I can't help it. People fascinate me and you meet the strangest and most wonderful people when you are camping. People come from all over, from all walks of life and it's a different experience then just bumping into someone at the grocery store.
11.) Roasted Weenies... LOL. DH hates it when I say that LMAO but he enjoys them too. Hot dogs taste better when you are camping. Putting a dog on a stick to roast and munch on is great and the kids love it. It's not often they get to cook over an open fire.
12.) Smores. marshmallows, Graham crackers and Chocolate. Enough said.
13.) Getting away from home. I spend nearly every day of every hour with my husband. So when we have the chance to get away and camp with the boys I absolutely love it. I can relax, no television or video games. No other kids knocking at my door. Just us (FAMILY) spending time together.
We all need a little more of that I think...
~ until next week
